Qiao Si Qiao Si Qiao SiNEW YORK —A study of the anti-inflammatory drugs Celebrex and Zoloft has found that the combination may be more effective than the traditional pain-relief medication, but may have the potential to increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal side effects.
The Food and Drug Administration has been reviewing studies of the use of Celebrex and Zoloft in adults and adolescents for the treatment of acute ulcer disease and arthritis.
While Celebrex and Zoloft are both prescribed to treat ulcers, the combination of these drugs can also cause other gastrointestinal side effects in the elderly, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
In addition, the study found that Celebrex may increase the risk of bleeding in elderly patients. However, Zoloft is not recommended for children and adolescents because of its potential to cause dementia.
“The evidence shows that Zoloft may cause death in the elderly,” said Dr. Michael R. Lechleiter, the study’s lead author and a professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. “This study provides further evidence that a combination of these drugs is safe and potentially safe for the elderly, particularly in the short term.”
Celebrex, known generically as celecoxib, is an anti-inflammatory drug that is approved for use in the United States to treat osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis that causes pain and inflammation in the joints.
When compared to the traditional pain reliever, Celebrex can be considered an effective treatment option for pain associated with osteoarthritis, said Dr. Peter B. Krumm, a professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
“The fact that it is the same drug in each of the two forms is important,” he said, “and that’s why we’ve seen that there’s so many potential side effects.”
A large number of studies have shown that Celebrex may cause a number of gastrointestinal side effects in the elderly. The most common side effects in the elderly include stomach discomfort, bleeding, and diarrhea.
“It’s important to keep in mind that Celebrex can also cause other gastrointestinal side effects, like indigestion, stomach pain, ulcers, stomach bleeding, and diarrhea,” said Lechleiter.
Zoloft, on the other hand, can cause a more serious side effect. Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that is used to treat depression and anxiety, and is sometimes used in some children. Zoloft is also used to treat depression.
“These are two different things that are relatively rare,” said Lechleiter. “It is important to keep in mind that these are the same drugs that are approved to treat depression and anxiety. They are not the same drugs, and they have different effects on the body.”
However, “if you’re using this drug as a treatment for depression,” he said, “you need to see your doctor about the use of other antidepressants, like SSRIs and SNRIs, in addition to the depression medication.”
The FDA also is reviewing all existing drug and non-drug studies on the use of Celebrex and Zoloft.
There are other studies of the use of Celebrex and Zoloft to treat osteoarthritis, such as a study published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinein 2022 in theJournal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

The treatment groups were similar and there were no significant differences in the number of adverse reactions reported between the treatment groups. The incidence of adverse events was similar for the treatment groups: there were 3 adverse events observed in the treatment groups with regard to the incidence of pain, back pain, and fatigue in the control group.
